Humans have been broadcasting radio for around 100 years. This means that the earliest broadcasts have traveled in space approximately 100 light years. The Milky Way is approximately 100,000 lightyears in diameter. Hence, the ‘bubble’ of space filled with human radio signals is only around a thousandth the diameter of the galaxy - shown by the little blue dot in the expanded portion of the above image.

If you’re looking for a good model viewer for the iPhone or iPad, Verto Studio 3D has an iTunes sideloader for OBJ files with MTL material sidecars:

That’s the iPhone retina display version running on the iPad 3. Technically, it’s a modeller but it’s a little too simple to really do much in the way of great models. If you don’t need texture support, Meshlab is good and it’s free. They are apparently working on texture support as it only supports vertex colours currently.

3D artists, this is an excellent example of real-world fluid dynamics and particle animation.

Comparison of Leading DSLRs:

If your camera your main creative tool (or even if it’s just one of them), then you’ve probably been wondering as I have how the new DSLRs that Canon and Nikon have recently released compare to each other. Some of my colleagues have purchased the 5DM3, others the D800, others the D4. Although I’m a lifetime Canon user, I’ve been in wait-and-see-mode, wanting first to see the results of a shootout between the top cameras at various ISOs.

Fortunately, DP Review just posted this super-helpful, customizable comparison of the top DSLRs, including the new Canon 5DM3 and Nikon’s D800 and D4. If you’re a 5DM2 shooter, as I am, you can also add that camera into the mix too, to see how it compares to the new models. [This only covers stills; there are no comparisons of the video quality here.]

Below is a screenshot of the comparison matrix that you’ll find when you follow the link to DP Review. You can drag the preview box around to see different details magnified at 100%.

My read of this comparison is a bit anticlimactic. My 5DM2 is still working great, and NAB is right around the corner. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony, who manufactures the sensor used in the D800, makes a solid entrance into the pro-DSLR arena then. And Panasonic’s GH3 is rumored to be released at NAB. So I’m going to stay in wait-and-see-mode for a while longer…

Creating panoramas and object orbits with your iPhone has become simple and fun with SpinCam. And it’s currently free on iTunes.

Here’s a link to a SpinCam that I just shot of my dog. And here’s a still from it:

The web interface isn’t nearly as good as spinning it with your finger on your iPhone, but if gives you a sense of it.

Here’s another SpinCam of me being a kung-fu dork.

I just wish there were more output options, in addition to the built-in Facebook share. Other that that, it’s awesome. And there’s zero learning curve with this fun little app. Just shoot and spin.
